Dem Kölner Snoeck Verlag ist es mit dieser Publikation gelungen, Michael Schmidts Bildern ein neues Gesicht zu geben. Schon der Umschlag aus dickem, festen Papier liegt gut in der Hand, dann das purpurne Leinen, mit dem das Buch gebunden ist, das neue Format. Dann sieht man die Präzision im Druck, die die Graustufen-Sprache Schmidts souverän transportiert.
Und dann kommt auf einmal die Erkenntnis. Wo sind wir? Irgendwo im Schmidt-Universum, irgendwo in Deutschland? Irgendwo, wo der Herbst langsam in den Winter übergeht.
Während 16 Reisen mit dem Wohnwagen ist dieses Projekt entstanden, Reisen in der Provinz, wo sich die Häuser drohend in den Betrachter wölben, wo die jungen portraitierten Frauen und Männer aber schon aufgebrochen sind. Nein, nicht nach Berlin. Irgendwohin.

After Michael Schmidt's large and important publications Waffenruhe and Ein-heit his new book Irgendwo makes for a smaller appearance. The title, which could be translated as exactly the middle between the terms Somewhere and Anywhere grasps the feeling of uneasiness that could hit you like a hammer in german province towns. On the other hand this feeling of repression and secreteness drops away completely in Schmidt's portraits of the teenagers which run like a strong and sensitive counter-current through the pictures of fences, block-houses, rocks and woods. So the smaller format makes a lot of sense, the lighter book in this case carries more weight.
