Next to Burtynsky´s book about contemporary China, we recommend Leong´s work. It might seem similar in it´s panoramic scope, and since the photographer is a protegé of Stephen Shore, he knows how to use the big format. But as Shore himself states in the afterword, this is a book about the radical fracture in todays society in China. Made visible in cities like Guangzhou in the Pearl River Delta, where in the last fiteen years 300 million people have settled, this giant movement is not so much frightening but a document of a history about to be erased and overturned.
